Getting a pay rise is more in your control than you might think it is

One Simple Step

It’s a New Year and I can bet that you would like a nice pay rise this year.

Who wouldn't?

You have another year of experience, you’re contributing to where you work, the cost of living is increasing - it is totally normal to want a pay rise

There are several things you can do to reasonably ask for a pay rise, but for now we will stick to one.

Your One Simple Step this week is…

Quantify your goals and achievements as they impact the company you work for

Why is this important?

There are several reasons someone deserves a pay rise all of which should contribute to the size of your pay rise and whether or not you get one.

But it’s important to think from the perspective of the company giving you the pay rise when you’re asking for one.

From a company’s perspective, they want to see what value you add to the business.

Ultimately, if you don’t get the pay rise you want you could choose to leave, and your company knows that without you needing to explicitly state it.

So what you’re trying to do is show the company that you contribute so much that the cost of hiring someone else and the time spent training them to be anywhere near as impactful as you, is more expensive than just giving you the pay rise you want.

So you need to think about how you can quantify your impact.

How do I implement this?

1. Think through your goals and achievements

Take some time to reflect on everything you have achieved at work - use that feedback session I emailed you about 5 weeks ago to help.

2. Think about how you can quantify your achievements

Did you run a successful marketing campaign for your company? Get the metrics on it so you can quantify the impact of that campaign.

Did you sign up X amount of new customers in your sales role? How does that compare to your target?

3. Try to relate these achievements back to financials

The metrics of the marketing campaign - can you find out how many leads, customers and revenue it resulted in?

The new customers you signed up - can you find out how much they spent and what revenue they contributed to?
