The Number One Thing That Keeps You Grounded When Times Get Tough

Last weekend I took a walk down memory lane and it made me realise something about how I handle tough times

Last weekend I went back to St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford
It was where I did my history degree

Going back struck all kinds of emotional chords

Memories of a time in my life that I absolutely loved
Reuniting with old friends like no time has passed

But when we caught up it was evident that a lot had changed in our lives
My own life has changed so much being married and a mother now

That is a good thing - it shows I’ve grown and evolved as a person

But a part of me is now thinking that just like the last 12 years since I started university have flown by

So will the next 12 years of my son’s life - at which point he’d be starting secondary school

It’s a stark reminder that time is our greatest asset
Once it’s gone it’s gone forever
And you don’t know how much of it you have

That is why I focus on my personal finances so reverently
I want to build wealth to have the freedom of choice
Of choosing how I spend my time

But I also want to balance planning for tomorrow
With enjoying today

So your One Simple Step this week

Is to reflect on your why
Why you want to improve your personal finances

That why keeps you grounded in the hard times
In the times where self doubt could creep in
In the times where you question what you’re doing
In the times you question why you’re doing something
Your why is your grounding force
